Courtney has been an educator in Durango since 2013, working across a variety of roles and age groups in elementary education. Originally from Colorado’s Front Range, she began her teaching degree at Colorado State University before transferring to Fort Lewis College, where she completed her degree and quickly began her teaching career.
In 2018, Courtney stepped away from the classroom to run a rafting business in Estes Park. Shortly after, she and her husband, Taylor, welcomed their son, Raleigh, in 2020. Over the next two years, she focused on raising their son and supporting Taylor in launching a new business, San Juan Vans, which later evolved into Outpost Campers, based in Bayfield, CO.
Courtney returned to education in 2022 as a reading and math interventionist, continuing in that role into the following school year. In 2024, she transitioned into her current position as the art instructor at Durango Montessori School, where she shares her creativity, passion for learning, and love of teaching with her students.
When she's not at DMS, Courtney enjoys spending time with family and friends, moving her body in any way she can, and always carving out time to be creative. She is currently enjoying learning silversmithing and exploring watercolor painting.

Physical & Outdoor
Education
Hello!! My name is Danielle Friedenson (she/her) and I am the Outdoor Education and Physical Education teacher for DMS. I am originally from Denver, CO where I grew-up backpacking in the Rocky Mountains, frolicking in wildflowers, splashing in mud puddles, and dancing in the rain. The outdoors is where I have felt the most empowered and authentic, and I strive to foster that same experience for all students at DMS. I received a double bachelors in Adventure Education and Psychology, and a certificate
in Wilderness and Adventure Therapy from Fort Lewis College.
In the past, I have served as an outdoor leader for Fort Lewis College’s Outdoor Pursuits program, a rock climbing supervisor for Avid4Adventure, and a guide for Alpengirl and Nifty Nanny. Additionally, I am currently guiding for LifeWays Conscious Wilderness Institute here in Durango mentoring La Plata teen girls.

When I am not leading others on outdoor adventures, I love to partake in adventures of my own through backpacking, camping, rock climbing, snowboarding, photography, social dancing, and playing french horn.
As someone who always found my love for physical activity through unconventional methods, I hope to help every student both find their personal relationship with nature and an appreciation for their unique strengths. Traditional physical education can be intimidating for some, and every individual has their own perspective on exercise. My goal is to empower students to be curious, authentic, and mindful humans who feel connected to themselves and the world around them by offering a blended curriculum of outdoor and physical education.
Stillwater Music
Stillwater Music is thrilled to be working again with the DMS student body for music instruction! Our approach for music classes is to have fun first because we know that having a fun and positive experience learning music is the secret to becoming a life-long musician! Kids (and frankly, beginning adults too) start out in our band classes playing real music and performing right away. This leads to a fun and successful experience early on.
If you visit Stillwater Music – especially in the afternoons after school – you will witness this mission in action every single day. We are a full-service music school with after school bands for kids, private lessons, early childhood classes throughout the day, in-school music classes, adult bands of varying levels of musical proficiency, and inclusive classes that bring together people with and without disabilities for a wonderful music and movement experience. We have approximately 800 students annually participating in our programs, 80% of whom are kids.
On Wednesdays this year, we welcome the entire student body of DMS to our facility where the older students engage in our signature rock band model, and the younger students are developing musical literacy by exploring rhythm, pitch, melody, and learning what it’s like to play music with a fun group of their peers.
We’re different from traditional school music programs like concert band, orchestra or choir. Our kids might not read music, and it’s not a requirement to participate in our bands. We meet each student where they are and design a repertoire that is accessible to each student in the band. As students work their way through our band program, it is common to see the students switch instruments between tunes so that, by the time they have been in our program for a couple of years, they are comfortable playing multiple instruments. Our instructors, Easton, Jeroen, and Makiah, are excited to share the joy of playing music with DMS’s students this year!
